Autonomy [Unreliable Narrator 2026]
I was in 5th grade when the boys started to comment on my chest. When the school coach told me I needed to wear a more supportive bra, I asked him why he didn’t have to wear one and was sent to the office. In junior high, the dress code only applied to the girls. While working as a lifeguard, complaints were regularly filed against the girl guards for showing an inappropriate amount of our bodies; we were wearing the company issued uniforms and the boys were shirtless.
In a room full of unclothed people, why would certain bodies need more censoring than others? I had been asking a version of this question my whole life while fighting standards that did not always treat everyone fairly. Why is the human body so stigmatized?
